1. What is a modern Crypt or Vault?
A crypt and vault is an aboveground form of interment, preferred by many families in our community, from different cultures and religions. Modern Crypts and Vaults are built for longevity, using a wide variety of materials, which offer many aesthetic and durable features and benefits.
The Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park has many Crypts and Vaults, which date back to 1901 and they continue to be the preference of many families within our community. We are currently expanding our Crypt and Vault areas to meet the needs of families who seek above ground interment. They are founded on solid rock foundations and are good examples of how new materials can be used to great effect.
The main structure, under construction now, includes high quality concrete with polished granite panels in different colours. Custom designed Vigil lights will be fitted, made of polished cast bronze and fine sand-blasted cast glass. The vases will be manufactured from deep-drawn alloy, designed to symbolise flowers, the regeneration of life, and the burning of an eternal flame.
In all, we will be providing 320 additional Crypt spaces and two Family Vaults, each with space for 12 interments. The area will be beautifully landscaped with paving and planting, offering families, friends and visitors a serene and artistically finished burial area of great beauty. The Stations of the Cross is incorporated into the design.
You are welcome to visit our Park to personally see the construction progress and to discuss the plans in this exciting new area.
2. Does the ownership of a crypt automatically go to my family when I die?
The ownership stays in the original holder's name, but the family can request with the correct supporting documentation to have it transferred.
3. What is an Exclusive Right of Burial and what does it mean?
An Exclusive Right of Burial entitles the person(s) to whom it is granted:
- an exclusive right of burial or disposition of the remains of the deceased person in the nominated burial place(s)
- the authority to give written consent for a person's remains being interred in the nominated burial place(s)
- the authority to provide written instructions for all arrangements associated with the nominated burial place(s)
At Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, the right is contractual only and does not evidence title to land. This right may be transferred, sold, or bequeathed when:
- ESMP receives written application from the Holder(s)
- The consent of the Trustees is provided.
- Payment of the appropriate fees has been made, and
- The Register of Burial Places is amended.
4.
If the owner of the grave is deceased, who has legal
claim?
The next of kin being the deceased's spouse followed by children unless otherwise determined in the deceased's Will.
5. Can a third interment occur in a grave?
A third interment may be possible at ESMP subject to a site inspection and approval by the cemetery trustees. Please note that in relation to burials, it is wise first to check with the cemetery office as practices vary between cemeteries as each has their own guidelines.
